Bumbershoot Chronicles 2014: Youngblood Hawke

Saturday, September 30th,  1:45pm on the End Zone Stage

Inspired by the Herman Wouk novel of the same name, Youngblood Hawke was born out of late night creative musings between longtime friends Sam Martin and Simon Katz. Exhausted by two years of touring with their former band Iglu & Hartly and the general turbulence that comes with music industry success, they looked for a more simple creative outlet where they could write and share music with friends and family without commercial pressures. With elements of pop, rock, indie, dance, and even a little hip hop, Youngblood Hawke creates music about being hopeful and never giving up.  Their latest LP ‘Wake Up’ released in 2013

Bumbershoot Chronicles 2014: Fly Moon Royalty

Saturday, September 30th,  11:45pm on the Fisher Green Stage
Saw this band last year at Capitol Hill Block Party.  Such an amazing group and a fantastic way to kick of Bumbershoot!

The combination that makes up Electro-Soul duo Fly Moon Royalty is Vocalist/ Fast Talker Adra Boo and DJ/Producer/Emcee Action Jackson. Adra, a Seattle native and sophisticated songstress, whose inspiration is drawn from everyday life, has been blazing trails in the theater and burlesque community, and is building her name as a one of a kind host for special events. Jackson, who re-located to Seattle from Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2009, is the musician’s musician in every sense of the phrase. He credits great artists such as Danny Elfman, DJ Premier and Stevie Wonder as some of his biggest influences and inspirations; he also continues to make his mark on the radar as a DJ in the Seattle area.

The duo formed in the winter of 2010 under the name Sugar Water Purple, but soon disbanded the moniker after discovering another group with the same name already existed, thus birthing Fly Moon Royalty. Their style remains soulful, but at the same time experiments with electronic textures, which makes up the backbone of their sound. Your ear is immediately keen to their influences drawn from the golden era of Hip Hop as well as a deep feel of 60’s influenced jazz and soul sounds, all of these are key elements that create the rebel dance music that is Fly Moon Royalty. Their sound touches upon familiarity, but it’s not approached in any traditional manner. Fly Moon Royalty has been compared to the Gossip, Janalle Monae and Gnarls Barkly.

After recording their self- titled debut project and releasing it independently in early 2011, Fly Moon Royalty caught the ear of DeVon Manier, President of Seattle based indie Hip Hop label Sportn’ Life Records. The two entities partnered and re-released the album as a joint effort.  In 2012 they came out with their Dimensions EP.

On February 18th, 2014 they released their Unfinished Business EP

CHBP Chronicles 2014: Pillar Point

Saturday, July 26th. 8.30pm.  Vera Stage

Pillar Point is the moniker for Seattle based artist, Scott Reitherman .  It shouldn’t come as a surprise if something about Pillar Point’s nine-song self-titled album sounds familiar. Despite being the band’s debut, the moody, melancholy electronica is the work of Scott Reitherman, who until now has been primarily known for his involvement with indie-pop outfit Throw Me The Statue. And while Reitherman’s new project shows off a never-before-seen gloom, his knack for writing tracks that crystalize emotion and work their way into a listener’s guts isn’t at all obscured.

The album, produced by Reitherman’s longtime collaborator Charlie Smith, is a musical departure for the Bay Area native. As Reitherman explains, “Part of what steered me toward the textures and beats of dance music was the feeling of catharsis you can experience through dance.” It’s a noble idea, considering the themes Reitherman’s songs are dealing with: heartbreak, loneliness, aging and isolation in an increasingly connected world. As The Grizzled Mighty, guitarist/vocalist Ryan Granger and drummer Whitney Petty make quite a ruckus. The Seattle duo’s bluesy, primal rock and roll has landed them opening slots for Reignwolf and the respect, admiration and astonishment of unsuspecting audience members throughout the Northwest.
